Non-Native Green Crab

Green Crab
A new marine exotic that was anticipated to arrive in British Columbian waters has now shown itself. They have been caught in Barkley Sound and Esquimalt Harbour and I'm sure I snagged one while fishing off the Ogden Point Breakwater. The green crab was introduced to the San Francisco estuary around 1989. The green crab is a voracious predator of clams and oysters, so is a potential threat to these important commerical species. Identifying features of this crab include its size - up to 3 inches wide across the back of the shell - five spines and a flat rear leg. If you happen to catch one of these crabs, please keep it and drop it off at the DFO office.
