Chum average between 8-15 lbs when mature. The largest on record weighted in at 33 lbs! Chum fry migrate downstream soon after emerging from the gravel, and by autumn most are leaving the coastlines for the open ocean. They usually remain in the ocean for three to five years, sometimes as long as seven, feeding mostly on crustaceans, squid and small fish. They enter their home waters in late fall and on big rivers such as the Yukon, have to travel as far as 2,00 miles up stream. Man, they sure look ugly after a trip like that! But mostly they spawn in the lower reaches of rivers and dreams, including very small creeks. Chum can also spawn successfully in the intertidal zone, so can pinks. |
