Smallest of a salmon, the pink averages 3-5 lbs. when mature. The largest recorded weighed in at a whoping 14 lbs.! Pink salmon normally leave for the ocean right after emerging from the gravel, and as with chum, the fry travel by night. After schooling in the estuaries they move into the open ocean come fall and often travel widely. In spite of the adults small size, pinks will feed on fish as well as the invertebrates which support their early growth. Pinks usually spawn in the lower reaches of rivers and some do so successfully in the intertidal zone, where the eggs are washed by fresh and salt water. |
