Sockeye are one of the smallest of the Pacific salmonoids. They average around 6 lbs. when mature and have been recorded up to 16 lbs. Sockeye fry emerge from the gravel in spring and move quickly to the nursery lakes near by. Most only spend a year in the lake, then move on to the ocean. In the ocean sockeye roam the open ocean in search of small crustaceans. They usually swim far into the Pacific and return after two years. |
